Answer engine

Definition

An answer engine is a system that responds to a question directly instead of returning a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews: they read the web, compose an answer, and hand it back. It is the surface all of this optimizing is aimed at.

Why it matters

For twenty years the game was ranking in a list a person then chose from. An answer engine removes the list: it makes the choice and speaks it, so being the source of the answer replaces being a link near the top.

That raises the stakes on being right. When an engine answers directly, most people never click through to check, so whatever it says about your brand is, for them, the fact of the matter.

Every other term here, from grounding to share of voice, is really a way of asking one question: when the answer engine speaks, is it building the answer from you, and is what it says true?

How Jinn treats it

Jinn treats the answer engine as the surface it is optimizing for, not a channel to game. The engines reward sources they can verify and quote cleanly, so the durable move is to be genuinely worth citing.

That is the throughline across every product: model the brand as a record an engine can check, keep the facts verifiable and the content liftable, and let the answer engines build from something real.
